Karauli Old Town historically known as ‘Kerowlee’ the capital of Karauli, an erstwhile princely state of Rajputana, is probably the most underrated destination for its heritage value in our country – clearly from an architectural perspective!

It is well situated in a position naturally defended by ravines on the north and east, while it is further protected by a great wall.
The palace of the maharaja is a handsome block of buildings built in pale red sandstone, dating mainly from the middle of the 18th century.
Old houses, city gates, temples and other ancillary buildings are outstanding samples of aesthetics and immaculate detailing!
Narrow crowded streets of the old town are like an animated collage of colourful visuals and different smells.
These lanes are like a movie set from the bye-gone era, with hawkers and shops selling clothes, ornaments, utensils, street food, groceries, etc. studded intermittently with water-huts, small temples, and mini-workshops where metal-smiths, sculptors and artists are busy creating, oblivious of all the hustle around them.
