about

Rajan is a creative professional practising his craft via several mediums –

Architecture and design

Rajan trained as an architect at Sir JJ school of architecture, Mumbai and as an industrial designer at the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. He abides by the dictum that better design improves the quality of how humans live, work, and play. Thus, for him, design is omnipresent shaping all aspects of everyday human life. Walter Gropius, the founder of Bauhaus School, summarizes the sentiment in the following words: Our guiding principle was that design is neither an intellectual nor a material affair, but simply an integral part of the stuff of life, necessary for everyone in a civilized society.

In line with this approach, Rajan runs a multidisciplinary design firm called Bezel Design that provides comprehensive design and build services in the fields of spatial design (buildings, interiors, and kinetic structures) and visual communication (signage, exhibitions and graphics).

Photography

Rajan is an avid photographer, passionate about capturing landscapes and street life across the globe. He pays close attention to detail, composition and perspective along with the interplay of light, shadow, reflection, colour and texture in his work. He learnt the craft while growing up in Jaipur and thus established Mool Foundation, the city’s premier art & design forum as a tribute to his father who was the Rajasthan state’s Chief Town Planner and an artist at heart. Some of his more recent work has been showcased at the following exhibitions:

  • Monochrome Dreams, Colorful Reality- Venue: Mool Foundation (Gallery), Jaipur. Dates: 21-23 October 2016
  • In-Between Spaces- Venue: IGNCA (Indira Gandhi Center for Culture & Art), Janpath, New Delhi – Dates: 7 – 9 April 2017
  • Delhi Direct – An Ode to the Living Streets of Delhi- IHC (India Habitat Center) Lodhi Road, New Delhi – Dates 1-30 June 2017
  • In-Between Spaces- Venue: Hotel Marriott, Jaipur – Dates: 1st October – 31st December 2017
  • A Bit of India- Venue: Hotel Marriott, Jaipur – Dates: 1st October – 1st February – 15th March 2018

In 2019, he was awarded the prestigious Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II award for excellence in photography at the grand Alankaran Awards 2018 ceremony held at the City Palace, Jaipur.

Writing and coaching

Rajan regularly trains the next generation of professional practitioners via internships in his design studio and coaching in the actual field.  He has been a visiting faculty in the School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi and the Apex College of Architecture and Aayojan College of Architecture, Jaipur. Recently, he co-authored a design monograph on Haathi Gaon – A Settlement for Elephants & Mahouts that illustrates the processes of building this unique settlement and the everyday life within.

Travel

Rajan is passionate about bicycle touring and experiencing disparate landscapes. His love for nature, travel and the outdoors help fulfil his never-ending zest to gain newer experiences of not only nature’s creations but also different socio-cultural environments that he meets across experiential journeys.
